The Albanian opposition party has dumped its long time leader Fatos Nano and has elected the populist Tirana mayor as its leader. Former Albanian President Rexhep Meidani was another candidate who was competing to lead the Socialist Party.
The general secretary of party, Gramos Ruci, resigned last night as well. Ruci, who was a close friend of Nano, was replaced by another populist socialist leader, Pandeli Majko who was a defense minister in the previous administration. The socialist party has now a more youthful face, and is expected to challenge the government more effectively .F.F
