The UN's chief war crimes prosecutor says top fugitive Ratko Mladic is hiding in Serbia, protected by elements of the Serbian army.

The former Bosnian Serb wartime general has been on the run since 1995. He has been charged with genocide and other crimes related to the Bosnian war.

"Mladic is in Serbia, and as you know, Mladic is protected with power of the army," said prosecutor Carla del Ponte.

She had urged Belgrade to hand him over to the tribunal in The Hague in 2005.
