UN Status Envoy Ahtisaari meets NATO chief

Kosovo dailies and TVs covered the meeting of the UN Status Envoy Martti Ahtisaari with the NATO chief Jaap de Hoop Scheffer in Brussels.

On the front page, Zëri quotes Ahtisaari as saying in a press conference that

“Whatever status Kosovo will have, the presence of NATO is vital because we need protection of minorities, religious sites and training of experts in the area of security”.

Under the headline Solution for Kosovo – between agreement and imposing, Koha Ditore quotes Ahtisaari as saying that if a solution is not reached by 31 December 2006 we need to live with that fact, but the timeframe suggested by the Contact Group is that there should be efforts to find the solution during this year.

“NATO is in Kosovo to protect the majority and the minorities, to protect religious sites and to prevent those who want to misuse the situation and the difficult process led by President Ahtisaari. NATO is in Kosovo to stay,” Koha Ditore quotes NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer as saying.

Bota Sot quotes Ahtisaari as saying on the front page that everyone is aware of the importance of the NATO presence in Kosovo. Status can be postponed, writes Kosova Sot.

“It can go on after 31 December”, Express quotes Ahtisaari as saying. According to the paper Ahtisaari has said that there are many solutions to the status and that he does not fear timeframes. He says that a solution can also be looked after in 2007, says the paper.

Kosovo’s status between two extremes, says Ahtisaari according to Epoka e re.
